The Underworld

The Viking god of mischief, Loki, had a daughter who was black on one side and white on the other. Here name was Hel, and her kingdom was Niflheim. This was the underworld, where Vikings believed most souls went after they died. Although Niflheim wasn’t all that bad, Hel’s name later came to be associated with a very unpleasant place. In fact, after someone added an “l” to her name, her name became a bad word for some people!
